The HBCU Chess Alliance aims to turn collegiate chess into a pathway to opportunity for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. By bringing campuses together through competition and connecting students with mentorship, scholarships, and career pathways, the Alliance is building a national network where students can gain recognition for their abilities and access resources to advance their futures.
The initiative addresses a gap between talent and access. According to UNCF, more than 70% of HBCU students are Pell Grant-eligible, and many are the first in their families to attend college. The Alliance sees chess as a way to cultivate their potential: students practise analysing complex situations, anticipating consequences, and adapting under pressure while building relationships across institutions. Its ambition is to connect the strategic thinking developed at the board with opportunities in the classroom, the workplace, and leadership.
